Disclosure quality · Where FTSE points quietly leak
The control exists. The English doesn’t say so.
Bilingual disclosure · GRI · IFRS S2 · FTSE Russell

The ESG points you lose in translation.

You did the work. Your Thai report is thorough. Then a defined term gets flattened, a Scope boundary drifts, a governance control turns into boilerplate — and the English edition an assessor reads no longer proves what you actually do. That is where a good Thai company quietly under-scores.

Where meaning leaks

Four places a term costs you.

Materiality — and double materiality

Rendered as a generic word for “importance,” the specific disclosure concept (impact vs. financial materiality) collapses. A rater reading the English can no longer tell you ran a proper materiality assessment — so the indicator goes unawarded, even though you did the work.

Scope 1 / 2 / 3 boundaries

When the operational-control boundary or a Scope definition drifts in the English edition, your emissions figures stop reconciling with your methodology. To an assessor that reads as a data-quality flag, not a rounding difference.

Transition plan vs. targets vs. commitments

These are distinct, scored things. Flatten “transition plan,” “target,” “commitment” and “aspiration” into one vague English word and you forfeit credit for the specific, higher-scoring disclosure you actually made.

Governance & oversight language

Board oversight of climate, committee mandates, remuneration links — precise governance terms mistranslated become unverifiable claims. The control exists in Thai; in English it reads as boilerplate, and boilerplate does not score.

Why nobody catches it

The gap is the handoff.

Translation firm

Renders the language accurately — but doesn’t know what GRI or IFRS S2 is looking for. Preserves words, not the scored distinctions.

+
ESG consultant

Knows the frameworks — but isn’t a certified translator. Writes in Thai, or hands the English to someone who isn’t either.

Between those two desks is where the meaning — and the points — fall out. Othello is built to be one desk.

Othello — one accountable bench

ISO 17100 certified translation และ in-house ESG methodology (IFRS S2 · GRI · TGO · ISO 14064), with a linguist-approved Thai↔English ESG glossary. The framework distinction and the language are held by the same team — so nothing is lost in a handoff that never happens.

The fix

Terminology-locked, clause for clause.

We fix the exact rendering of every framework and carbon term for your report up front, hold it consistent across both editions and every reporting cycle, and reconcile figures and boundaries clause for clause. The version your SEC reads and the version your rating is built on finally say the same thing.

Straight answers

Translation risk, answered.

How can a translation error affect an ESG score?
FTSE Russell scores SET-listed companies from their public, English-readable disclosure — no questionnaire. Assessors award credit for what the English text demonstrably says. If a framework term is mistranslated, flattened or omitted in the English edition, the underlying practice becomes invisible to the score even when it is fully documented in Thai.
Isn’t a good translation agency enough?
Not for disclosure. General translation firms render language accurately but do not know what GRI, IFRS S2 or a rating methodology is looking for — so they cannot preserve the distinctions that carry the points. ESG consultants know the frameworks but are not certified translators. The risk lives precisely in that handoff. Othello is the rare firm that is both: ISO 17100 certified and ESG-methodology-fluent in-house.
What is a “terminology-locked” bilingual disclosure?
It means we fix, up front, the exact Thai↔English rendering of every framework and carbon term for your report — a linguist-approved ESG glossary — and hold it consistent across both editions and across reporting cycles. Figures, boundaries and defined terms reconcile clause for clause, so nothing drifts between the version your SEC reads and the version your rating is built on.
Can you fix an English edition that’s already published?
Yes. We run a disclosure-quality and figure-drift review against your Thai filing, flag where meaning or numbers have leaked, and rebuild the English edition to reconcile — in time for the assessment cycle where possible.
