A Historic Shift in Equality
As of January 23, 2025, Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia and the second in Asia to fully legalize same-sex marriage. This landmark reform brings long-overdue legal parity to LGBTQ+ couples and establishes Thailand as a regional leader in equality and human rights.
At Othello International, we proudly support all couples — Thai and international, same-sex and opposite-sex — by offering full-service legal, translation, and registration assistance for marriage in Thailand.
📜 Legal Overview: Marriage Equality Act 2024
In mid-2024, the Thai government passed the Marriage Equality Act, amending the Civil and Commercial Code to eliminate gender-specific language. Terms like “husband and wife” were replaced with “individuals” and “spouses,” ensuring equal legal standing for same-sex couples in all aspects of marriage.
Rights Now Granted:
- Full marriage registration rights
- Legal inheritance, tax, and property ownership
- Eligibility for joint adoption
- Access to healthcare and hospital visitation rights
- Recognition of same-sex marriages for spousal visas, insurance, and social security
- Legal pathways for divorce and dispute resolution
Thailand’s legal recognition now applies across all district offices, embassies, and civil registration systems.

Marriage Equality in Thailand: What Changed
Thailand’s Marriage Equality Act came into force on 23 January 2025, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to recognise same-sex marriage. The law amends the Civil and Commercial Code so that two people — regardless of gender — can register a marriage and enjoy the same spousal rights, including inheritance, tax, medical decision-making and adoption. For international couples, this opens a straightforward, well-established registration route at any district office (amphur).
Documents Foreign Couples Usually Need
- Valid passports for both partners
- An affidavit of freedom to marry (single status), issued or notarised by each partner’s embassy
- Certified Thai translation of the affidavit and passport details
- Legalization of the translated affidavit by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Divorce or death certificates where a previous marriage applies (translated and legalized)
How the Registration Works
Most embassies issue an affidavit confirming you are free to marry. That affidavit is translated into Thai, legalized by the MFA, and presented with your passports at the amphur, which registers the marriage and issues the Thai marriage certificate (Kor Ror 3). If you need the Thai certificate recognised back home, we translate and legalize it for use abroad. Othello guides couples through each step so nothing is rejected on a technicality.
How Othello Helps
We prepare accurate certified translations of every supporting document, manage the MFA legalization chain, and translate your final Thai marriage certificate for use in your home country. Our team keeps name spellings consistent across passports, affidavits and certificates — the detail that most often causes delays at the counter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two foreigners marry in Thailand?
Yes. Two non-Thai partners can register a marriage in Thailand provided each presents a valid passport and an affidavit of freedom to marry, translated into Thai and legalized.
Will our Thai marriage be recognised abroad?
Recognition depends on your home country’s laws. Where it is recognised, you will typically need a certified translation and legalization of the Thai marriage certificate — which we provide.
