Interpretation

Mode selection depends on participant count, time budget, room configuration, and the substantive engagement type. The structural test: simultaneous when (a) you have multiple non-source-language participants who need real-time understanding, (b) you can’t double the meeting time, or (c) the engagement is multi-language plenary. Consecutive when (a) one or two participants need interpretation and time-doubling is acceptable, (b) the engagement values precision over time-efficiency (negotiation, training, audit), or (c) the room configuration doesn’t support booth setup.

Other operational considerations: Whispered fits when 1–2 listeners are embedded in a primarily-monolingual meeting (no equipment, but pair beyond 30 min). Court / Legal is determined by the proceeding (Thai court, arbitration, deposition) — not by client preference. RSI fits hybrid or remote-participant events. The 30-minute scoping call at Pathway 02 typically resolves mode selection against substantive engagement profile.

Simultaneous interpretation has substantively high cognitive load — the interpreter is listening, comprehending, mentally translating, and speaking continuously, all in real time, often at speaker delivery speeds of 120+ words per minute. Sustained cognitive load at that intensity degrades accuracy after 20–30 minutes. The AIIC, UN, EU, and most institutional interpretation frameworks codify the 20–30 minute rotation discipline with a paired team as the operational standard.

The working pair isn’t redundancy — both interpreters are working throughout. The inactive interpreter monitors the active interpreter’s output, provides real-time terminology support (numbers, names, acronyms that the active interpreter might need backup on), prepares the next handover, and provides backup if the active interpreter has a technical issue (microphone failure, document needed, sudden coughing fit). Solo simultaneous beyond 30 minutes is operationally substandard — institutional procurement governance routinely flags solo simultaneous as a quality risk.

Four substantive standards apply across the modes Othello operates. (1) ISO 2603:2016 — permanent (fixed, built-in) booths for simultaneous interpretation in conference facilities. (2) ISO 4043:2016 — mobile (portable) booths for simultaneous interpretation, assembled at the venue for the specific event. This is the standard most institutional Bangkok event simultaneous interpretation runs under. (3) ISO 24019:2022 — simultaneous interpreting delivery platforms (RSI/VRI), covering platform performance, audio latency, video frame rate, console functionality, and security. (4) AIIC Professional Standards — the international institutional standard for working-pair discipline, rotation cadence, and working conditions, adopted by UN and EU institutions.

For court & legal interpretation, the Thai Civil Procedure Code (CCP) and Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) govern interpreter conduct in Thai court proceedings. Interpretation pricing runs hourly with a half-day minimum and full-day standard rate. Rate varies substantively by mode (consecutive baseline, simultaneous higher due to paired-team discipline, court & legal higher due to specialised methodology depth), by language pair (Thai–English most common, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, ASEAN regional, German all available), by paired-team requirement (paired-team uplift for engagements beyond rotation thresholds), and by equipment scope (booth-tier equipment costed in for simultaneous, no equipment cost for consecutive or whispered).

For institutional RFP-tier procurement (UN system, Big Law, multilateral, government), pricing runs through formal RFP under mutual NDA — the substantive pricing structure aligns with the engagement-letter framework and procurement governance discipline. Substantive lead time depends on the mode and engagement tier. Booth-tier simultaneous (Conference / AGM tier) needs the longest lead time — ideally 3–4 weeks ahead, especially for peak season (SET-listed AGM Q1–Q2 concentration, conference season Q3–Q4). The lead time covers: paired-team capacity reservation, equipment partner coordination, equipment site visit at the venue, glossary build 5 BD ahead. Last-minute booking is possible but degrades all four operational discipline dimensions.

Consecutive and whispered (Single Event tier) can run on shorter lead time — typically 1–2 weeks, with the glossary build still needing 5 business days ahead. Court & legal (Specialised Proceedings tier) typically follows court schedule (often 2–4 weeks notice). RSI / Remote needs tech rehearsal time on the client platform, typically 1 week ahead. Yes — court & legal interpretation is one of the four primary modes. Substantive coverage runs across five categories: (1) Thai court proceedings under the Thai Civil Procedure Code (CCP) and Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), with interpreter sworn under affirmation at the proceeding (Thailand has no sworn-interpreter national registry — court-appointed at each proceeding). (2) Depositions and letters rogatory for cross-border legal matters. (3) International arbitration at TAI (Thai Arbitration Institute), THAC (Thailand Arbitration Center), ICC (International Chamber of Commerce), SIAC (Singapore International Arbitration Centre).

(4) Immigration proceedings at the Immigration Bureau. (5) Police and prosecutor interviews at the substantive investigation tier. Court & legal mode operates under verbatim accuracy discipline — the interpreter renders what the speaker said, not what the interpreter thinks the speaker meant. Yes — Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI), Video Remote Interpretation (VRI), and Over-the-Phone Interpretation (OPI) are the fourth primary mode. Othello’s interpreters work across the institutional RSI platforms — Interprefy, KUDO, Zoom (Interpretation Booth feature), Webex, Microsoft Teams (with interpretation add-on), Boostlingo, and the major hybrid event platforms. Tech rehearsal pre-engagement is mandatory — the interpreter team plus the client’s event team test audio routing, video latency, console mapping, internet redundancy, and platform-specific features against ISO 24019:2022 platform requirements before live delivery.

Substantive applications: hybrid events with remote participants, cross-border arbitration with remote witnesses, UN-system multilateral meetings across time zones, cross-border board meetings, multi-jurisdictional client briefings. Cognitive load is identical to in-person simultaneous — same paired-team requirement, same 20–30 minute rotation, same glossary lockstep. For multi-language conference events, Othello coordinates multilingual booth deployment under ISO 4043 with paired teams per language pair. Equipment is included in the engagement quote rather than passed through as a separate line item. For booth-tier simultaneous, Othello sources equipment through accredited Bangkok conference audio-visual partners with substantive equipment inventory, pre-event maintenance discipline, on-site technical operation, and institutional venue access. The substantive simplification matters for institutional procurement governance — line-item ambiguity creates audit-trail friction at the procurement evaluation tier.

For venues that have institutional booth standards and accredited equipment partner networks (UN Conference Centre Bangkok / UNCC, MFA Saranrom Palace, arbitration centres at TAI / THAC, top Bangkok 5-star conference hotels), Othello coordinates against the venue’s institutional standard rather than imposing alternative equipment. Consecutive, whispered, and court & legal modes don’t require equipment beyond standard meeting-room audio.
