What a “single affidavit” is — and why Thailand cares 

A single affidavit (also called Affidavit/Affirmation of Freedom to Marry or Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry) is a sworn statement from your own embassy/consulate confirming you’re free to marry. Thai district offices (Amphur/Khet) commonly require it from foreigners before they register a marriage. U.S. Embassy Thailand 

Different embassies call it different things and run different procedures (swearing an affirmation, issuing an affidavit, etc.). The point is the same: a notarized statement that you are not currently married and are legally able to marry under your home country’s law. U.S. Embassy ThailandGOV.UK 

The end-to-end process (clean, realistic sequence) 

1. Get the affidavit from your embassy/consulate 

1. Book an appointment and bring ID plus any supporting documents your mission asks for (divorce decree, death certificate, deed poll/name-change, etc.). 

2. Examples: 

1. U.S. citizens: embassy/consulate notarizes a marriage affidavit. Appointments are required. U.S. Embassy Thailand+1 

2. UK nationals: apply online for an affirmation of marital status, then attend the embassy appointment to sign the declaration. GOV.UK 

2. Translate the affidavit into Thai 

1. District offices and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) work from Thai. Use a certified Thai translation with a translator’s certificate. (If your supporting documents aren’t in Thai or English, translate those too.) 

3. Legalize the translation at Thailand’s MFA (Dept. of Consular Affairs, Chaeng Watthana) 

1. The MFA authenticates signatures and seals on the embassy document/translation. Bring the original affidavit, translation, passport copy, and any supporting papers (and their translations). Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thailand 

4. Register your marriage at a Thai district office 

1. Take the MFA-legalized package to the Amphur/Khet. Requirements vary by office; some ask for additional proof for divorced/widowed applicants or for Thai-language versions of certain documents. 5. After registration: translate your Thai marriage certificate back to English (or your language) and legalize if your home country needs it

What to prepare (document checklist) 

• Affidavit/Affirmation of single status from your embassy/consulate (original, signed/notarized). U.S. Embassy ThailandGOV.UK 

• Passport (+ biographic copy). 

• If previously married: final divorce decree or spouse’s death certificate; translations into Thai + translator’s certificate. 

• If name changed: official name-change document; translation. 

• For UK nationals: affirmation application receipt and appointment confirmation per embassy instructions. GOV.UK 

• For U.S. citizens: completed affidavit form for Bangkok/Chiang Mai if using the embassy’s templates. U.S. Embassy Thailand 

Timing: realistic, not optimistic 

• Embassy appointment lead time: depends on mission demand; plan several days to 2+ weeks ahead in peak periods. (Most missions are appointment-only.) U.S. Embassy Thailand 

• MFA legalization: standard vs. express services vary; allow 1–3 working days in normal periods, longer around holidays. Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thailand 

• Marriage registration: same day if your documents are perfect and the district office is not backlogged. 

Frequent rejection triggers (avoid these) 

• Name/romanization inconsistencies between passport, affidavit, and translations (spacing, diacritics, order). 

• Affidavit not issued correctly (wrong mission, unsigned, expired, or missing the notarial seal). U.S. Embassy Thailand 

• Missing proof for prior marriages (no decree/death certificate, or un-translated attachments). 

• Uncertified translations (no translator’s certificate/seal) or incomplete Thai translations of attachments. 

• Assuming all district offices ask for the same set—they don’t; some Amphurs are stricter. 

Special notes by nationality (typical—not exhaustive) 

• U.S. citizens: You’ll swear an affidavit before a consular officer. The embassy provides blank affidavit templates and requires appointments for notarial services. After notarization, translate and legalize at MFA. U.S. Embassy Thailand+1 

• UK nationals: You’ll apply online, then sign an affirmation at the British Embassy Bangkok; fees and steps are published and periodically updated. Translate and legalize before the Amphur. GOV.UK 

• Other nationalities: Many embassies in Bangkok follow similar oath/affirmation models. Always check your mission’s requirements before you draft translations. 

Bottom line: the affidavit is issued by your embassy, but Thailand will only act on the Thai-language, MFA-legalized version. Plan your schedule around embassy appointments and MFA processing.
