Othello was founded in 2020 in Bangkok, shortly before COVID-19. The translation work itself — public health documentation, diplomatic and consular materials, regulatory communications, training materials, cross-border legal documentation — all runs to similarly exacting standards. Establishing the firm against this standard from day one set the operating discipline that still governs every engagement today.

In-person work is available and is the default for confidential engagements — particularly Big Law and SET-listed disclosure work where digital transmission is sometimes structurally inappropriate.

ISO 17100:2015 is a translation-services-specific international standard, not a generic quality management standard. ISO 9001 covers any organisation’s quality management at a generic level; ISO 17100 specifies the actual translation workflow, linguist competencies, terminology management, and engagement process specific to translation services.

Substantive requirements: (1) Translator competence — defined education/experience/language qualifications; (2) TEP workflow — Translation–Editing–Proofreading as three distinct stages with separation between translator and editor; (3) Project management; (4) Quality management — defined QC processes, error categorisation, evidence trail; (5) Technology infrastructure — translation memory, terminology management; (6) Engagement framework. For institutional procurement teams, ISO 17100 is the substantive translation standard that matters.

Two separate professional bodies with different regional anchoring. The American Translators Association (ATA) is the US-anchored professional association, founded 1959, Alexandria VA. The Association of Translation Companies (ATC) is the UK-anchored trade body, founded 1976, London. ATC Accredited Membership requires meeting the ATC Code of Professional Conduct covering quality management, data security, project management, and commercial conduct.

The two are complementary, not duplicative. ATA matters for US-market work; ATC matters for UK/EU-market work. Carrying both is structurally significant — most Thailand-based translation firms carry one or neither.

GDPR has extraterritorial scope — it applies to any organisation processing personal data of EU/EEA residents, regardless of where that organisation is located. Thailand’s PDPA (B.E. 2562 / 2019, effective June 2022) is structurally modelled on GDPR with Thai-specific adaptations.

The two regimes operate in parallel: GDPR for EU/EEA-resident data subjects, PDPA for Thai-resident data subjects. For multinational engagements where both apply (typical for SET-listed Thai corporates with European investor coverage), the operational compliance regime is the union of the two — meeting whichever requirement is more stringent on each operational dimension.

Three structural reasons. (1) Confidentiality: Big Law, US government, SET-listed pre-disclosure, and ESG advisory work involves source material that cannot operationally be shared with external freelancers, overseas vendors, or LLM-based processing pipelines that retain source data. (2) Methodology consistency: ESG Advisory methodology credentials (IFRS S2, ISO 14064, AA1000AS, GRI, TGO) are held by named individuals on the in-house bench — outsourced work cannot carry the same anchoring. (3) TM compounding: Five years of bilingual annual reports produce a TM asset that delivers compounding savings on multi-year client programmes — but only if the bench using the TM is the same bench that built it. Freelance rotation breaks the compounding.

Each credential has a different verification mechanism. (1) ISO 17100:2015 — certification by accredited certifying body; certificate number and certifying body provided at procurement scoping. (2) ATA Affiliated — verifiable through ATA member directory at atanet.org. (3) ATC Accredited — verifiable through ATC member list at atc.org.uk. (4) GDPR Compliant — no single GDPR certification body; compliance evidenced through GDPR-aligned policies, data processing register, vendor due diligence. (5) PDPA Compliant — no PDPC formal certification scheme; compliance evidenced through PDPA-aligned policies, Thai consent framework, DPO contact.

The substantive translation services quality standard is ISO 17100:2015 — translation-specific, more rigorous on translation workflow than ISO 9001’s generic quality management. For procurement evaluation, ISO 17100 covers the substantive ground that matters: translator competence requirements, TEP workflow, terminology management, technology infrastructure, and engagement process. ISO 9001 alone does not cover this substantive translation-specific ground.

The five firm-level credentials (ISO 17100, ATA, ATC, GDPR, PDPA) operate alongside the bench-level methodology credentials (IFRS S2, ISO 14064, AA1000AS, GRI, TGO, VERRA). Together they form the substantive verifiable credentialing. Where a specific RFP requires ISO 9001 separately, the requirement is met at engagement scoping — discuss procurement requirements at first contact.
